A new Indian restaurant specializing in fast service, Indian comfort food and curry is planned for 9809 W. Oklahoma Ave. on the southwest side of the city.

To be called Curry Hut, the restaurant is being opened by brother and sister team Sanjeev and Kavita Sharma. The two have been working on the project for the past two years, Kavita told Urban Milwaukee.

Curry Hut will offer classic Indian dishes that many have come to expect from Indian restaurants like Butter Chicken Masala, Chicken Tika and Shahi Paneer, but service will remind customers of fast-casual eateries, Kavita said. The restaurant will also sell classic Indian sweets and desserts like Gulab Jamun, she said. The restaurant will do carry-out and have space for dining.

Kavita said her mother was a passionate cook, something she passed along to her children. She passed away a few years ago, and the restaurant is in part an homage to her. In fact, some of the dishes served will be based on her mother’s recipes, she said.

The restaurant will also have a number of vegan and vegetarian options, said Kavita, who is herself a vegetarian.

This is their first restaurant in Milwaukee, but Sanjeev managed a restaurant for years in India, Kavita said.

The location Curry Hut will be located in has been home to restaurants in the past, but Kavita said they’ve put a lot of work into the space and it will look brand new. The plan is to open in May, Kavita said, “just crossing my fingers.”

It is part of a larger strip mall at S. 98th St. and W. Oklahoma Ave. that is anchored by Desi Market.

Most recently, the space being occupied by Curry Hut was home to Awan’s Desi Cuisine, which moved to 3933 S. 76th St. before closing its doors permanently.
