On Friday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m., Present Music will be celebrating Neon Life, their season finale virtual ensemble concert. It should be a very cool event. The cost is $10, but it’s free for Urban Milwaukee members.

Neon Life highlights the work of an unlikely combination of composers and unleashes the creativity of local filmmaking group TankThink.

Israeli composer Aviya Kopelman’s work “Neon Lights” pays homage to the iridescent glow that draws us into jazz clubs, while Australian composer Tansy Davies’ “Neon” evokes the buzz of nocturnal urban rhythm. Daniel Kidane’s “Winged” and David Lang’s “learn to fly” evoke the zero-gravity thrill of spiraling in midair.

Present Music interprets the finale from storied saxophonist and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Henry Threadgill’s sweeping and beautiful “Old Locks and Irregular Verbs” in a new version for large ensemble. Threading the whole program together is “Life,” a series of aphorisms by Dutch luminary Louis Andriessen that distill overwhelming complexities of life on Earth into arrestingly humble musical expressions.

Neon Life features artists of our time, who capture our moment with clarity, reverence, and the requisite sense of adventure.
