7 People Shot Outside Funeral Home
All are in stable condition. Police are searching for unknown suspect.
Seven people were shot in an apparent drive-by shooting while attending the funeral of another gunshot victim Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee.
The victims are in stable condition at a local hospital, said acting Milwaukee Police Chief Michael Brunson Sr.
The victims include three women — a 48-year-old, a 26-year-old, and a 24-year-old — and four men — a 29-year-old, a 26-year-old, a 24-year-old and a 20-year-old — according to police. The victims were transported to a local hospital where they are being treated for their injuries. At this time, each victim is in stable condition, police said Wednesday evening.
The shooting happened at about 12:45 p.m. on Milwaukee’s north side outside Serenity Funeral Home, 4217 W. Fond Du Lac Ave.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, we are seeking an unknown suspect at this time,” Brunson said.
About 100 mourners gathered for the funeral of Braxton Taylor, 26, the victim of a homicide on Sept. 17, according to the Journal Sentinel.
“Our prayers are with the victims and the family members during this terrible time,” Brunson said. “This is an untenable situation. This brazen act that was done in broad daylight is just unacceptable in our city. We are working feverishly to identify who committed this act.”
Brunson is asking anyone who has information to call Milwaukee Police at 414-935-7360 or Milwaukee Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.
Milwaukee is on track to have one of its most violent years since the 1990s. As of Monday, there were 138 homicides in the city, compared to 66 by the same time last year.
Milwaukee police blame the coronavirus pandemic and the number of guns on the streets for the increase in homicides.
