Project of the decade? Arguably. However, it is a turning point in the further development of the Third Ward.

While reading about Marcus Corp’s tentative, early plans for its mixed-use project on Edison Street last night, I was again reminded, as all Milwaukeans should be, of the critical and continuing impact of John Norquist. Revising city codes, the Riverwalk, demolishing the Park East Freeway, and early development of the Third Ward and only the major parts of his legacy to Milwaukee.

It takes a village to build a city, and it also takes great leaders to do great things and avoid the ill-advised, even when most others can’t see what is really called for. Long live The Norq! 😉

I would add that I’m thrilled by the success of the Third Ward, Pabst Brewery and Bayview redevelopment. Cultivated development, yes, but also not dependent on big scale projects like convention centers and arenas. Not that there is anything wrong with those.

Lastly, I was struck by the Third Ward listing on wikipedia. The list of milestones since the 1970s is illuminating. The Kimpton Journeyman has been a long time coming.
