It should be noted that the whole Brewery project was able to take shape as a successful mixed-use development after the Pabst City plan for an “entertainment” complex was nixed in 2005 by the Common Council. We got local and authentic rather than a monolithic “destination” with national chains. Something for citizens and the Common Council to consider. The Pabst micro-brewery just adds more more diversity to this mix.

BTW, Game World, one of the planned national chains planned to anchor Pabst City, has seen 17 of its U.S. sites shuttered. Only 7 remain. As Bruce’s article on the Bucks entertainment mall points out, these malls often fail. When vendors pull out of malls they leave gaping holes, more ghostly than empty storefronts.

Thanks for the reporting on such a positive community success story that so many worked very hard and put money at risk to achieve. This shows what can happen when business, government, and citizens work together to solve problems. And all the many businesses that located in this redeveloped area.

Pabst was #1 in Milwaukee for decades. I am glad to see it back even if in a small way. I still enjoy a few good beers, but cannot drink like years ago after softball games and Pabst was the on tap beer, filling many pitchers as the top choice by many.

I’d add. Yes PabstCity, was voted down. But to be clear there is certainly all sorts of government subsidy involved in the rebirth of The Brewery.

Hopefully Pabst will keep their equipment clean this time around.

This is certainly a feel good story. I look forward to taking a tour, having a meal, and maybe having a Kloster. As the article mentions it will be a micro-brewery brewing 2,000 barrels a year and if business warrants it, that can be upped to 10,000 barrels a year. In 2013, Metropoulos sold almost 6 million barrels of PBR so chances are Miller will continue to brew the bulk of the PBR product. Welcome back to Milwaukee and roll out the barrel!
