The Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival returns for its 28th year

The festival opens tonight at the Oriental with "I Am Divine," a doc on the infamous drag queen of the same name, and continues through Sunday at UWM's Peck School of the Arts.

You thought all the best films in the city left with the Milwaukee Film Festival? Think again. Now in its 28th year, the Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival starts up tonight, presenting a weekend full of recent and classic LGBT-themed features and shorts.

The series is curated by festival staff members, who also select films throughout the year in conjunction with the film department at UWM’s Peck School of the Arts. But while those monthly selections may get further afield and test boundaries, the annual festival tends to feature a broad spectrum of films that represent the best works LGBT and queer cinema have had to offer. This year is no different, with documentaries depicting individuals as varied as the “Filthiest Woman Alive,” five representatives from the first generation of trans women and Alice Walker; features about a romance-addled optometrist, a San Francisco woman between relationships and a closeted Polish priest; and evenings of men’s, women’s and trans* short films.

The festival spans four days, so we’ve got four more pages of preview coverage for each. But just in case you’re feeling lazy, here’s the full list, along with links to individual days. All screenings (except the opening night screening of I Am Divine, tonight at the Oriental Theatre) are at UWM’s Union Theatre, at 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd. on the 2nd floor. Tickets are generally $9, $7 for students/seniors; opening night tickets are $15 and $10, respectively. If you’re looking to see multiple films, you can also get an unlimited Festival Pass for $75 or five tickets for the price of four ($35, $25 for students and seniors). To order, visit the festival’s online box office, call (414) 229-4308, or visit the PSOA box office, Outwords Books or the Oriental Theatre.
