Last night, the Third Coast Daily team left our cozy Grand Avenue office to attend the Milwaukee Press Club awards: a yearly celebration of journalism in Milwaukee held at the Intercontinental Hotel downtown. It marked our third time at the ceremony, having won five Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism awards last year, including a first-place award for Tom Strini’s critical reviews, and a first-place award for Best Web Site Design in 2010. This year, we were up for three awards in total.

And we won. And won. And won.

TCD was awarded first-place Excellence in Journalism awards in all three of those categories: Best Critical Review, for Tom Strini’s arts reviews, Best News Photograph, for Lacy Landre’s photographs of the Sikh Temple vigil, and Best News or Feature Website. That last award honored current staff as well as former co-owner Jon Anne Willow and former managing editor Dan Shafer. Those entries rank among the more than 500 submitted by professional and collegiate publications across Wisconsin, and we consider it a true honor to have received this critical recognition from our peers in journalism across the country.

We would also like to congratulate our competitors in this categories, all of whose company we are honored to be in, and those other winners from last night’s event. The Milwaukee Press Club hasn’t updated their list of winners yet to indicate which entries won Gold, Silver or Bronze awards, but you can find it here at their website.

Along with those award winners, last night’s event honored Sacred Cat Award winner Cokie Roberts, Headliner Award winner Barry Alvarez and Wisconsin Journalist of the Year Steve Walters, of WisconsinEye Public Affairs Network.
