The Great Inversion

The next installment of the Urban Milwaukee Book Club will focus on the recent evolution of American cities. We will be reading The Great Inversion: and the Future of the American City by Alan Ehrenhalt.

The Great Inversion is an honest look at the future of big cities across the country, not a few cherry-picked examples. Ehrenhalt doesn’t focus solely on downtowns, core neighborhoods, or suburbs, instead examining forces like immigration and gentrification that are affecting them all. It’s a refreshing take, given that many similar books are either almost over-the-top urbanism boosterism or anti-planning screeds that miss the big picture. If that hasn’t convinced you to read it, The New York Times recently published a favorable review of the book.

We will convene for discussion and a social hour on September 17th in the backroom of My Office, 763 N. Milwaukee St, at 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend, the discussions are informal and open-ended.

The book is available from Amazon, Boswell Books, the Milwaukee Public Library, and bookstores everywhere.
