Rock your look

Out of all the music genres, “Rock”  has had an undeniable impact on fashion –its influence is seen everywhere from the runway to the red carpet, and many places in between. Whether it’s uber-edgy punk rock style, over-the-top glam or in-your-face metal, the rock-inspired look makes a statement and it’s tons of fun to boot.

Incorporating a little rock and roll into your wardrobe is easy since there isn’t a real recipe for it. I’m not talking about just buying a band shirt to wear with your favorite jeans. I’m talking bold, daring pieces with attitude — find what you like, then mix and match. You can play with texture, color and layers — it’s one of the few instances when “more” is more. And that’s a good thing.

Here are some tips for rocking your wardrobe with style:

Color: Black, of course. Luckily this color is known to help us look a little slimmer. No argument from me, plus it reeks of drama.

Style: Wear leather! Pants, vests, leather cuffs and collars with spikes, and pieces with metal detail. For you glam fans out there, choose something that sparkles.

Hairstyles: Fringed, heavily layered cuts, bright colored highlights, separated chunky hair, long teased locks. No mullets though!

Shoes: Chains, buckles, metal heels, stilettos, cuffed or collared heels.

Fit: Make sure the clothes fit well! Stay away from baggy, oversized clothing or something that’s so tight you can barely breathe. We can’t all do the Keith Richards thing.

Style: Look to your favorite bands and/style blogs to help refine and define your look.

Accessories: Bold, statement pieces with leather, steel and bling!

Makeup: Dark, smoky eyes with heavily lined lids. Add a bit of glitter for some sparkle.

Now for a few of my favorite things…

Spike-lry (Spikey Jewelry)
Have a thing for spikes? I just about died when I stumbled on these pieces of attitude from Joomi Lim. These are just smokin’. Edgy and with gorgeous feminine touches, this line allows you to be chic and fierce at the same time!

Shoes!
I could go on and on about shoes. I’m kind of addicted to them in a weird way. The  winner of my “Oh-SO-Fierce” award: Louise Goldin’s Top Shop Spike Heels. Oh my.  Also great are shoes from Fergie and Steve Madden. But wait, there’s more! Check out  this totally great concept: Shoe Jewelery! Accessorize shoes you already have with shoe  jewelry from Litter SF! I think these are going on my Christmas list.

Nails
I’m totally hyped about OPI’s Katy Perry Collection. Check out these great shades. Try “Black Shatter” over plain white nail polish and there you have it, instant rocker nails. For a  more feminine touch, “Teenage Dream” does the trick with its glammy-sparkle.

Temporary Tattoos- The Bad Girl accessory

Love the tattooed look but don’t want to commit? Join top designers like Rodarte, Chanel, and Jean Paul Gaultier wear some of these bad boys. Kat Von D, Beyonce,  and Betsey Johnson all offer a line of temporary tattoos. Now you can say “yes” to that  heart tattoo you’ve always wanted!

Rock those locks!
Finish off your look with awesome hair. To get that rocker chick style, try the Rockaholic line from Tigi. They have a huge selection of products to create those fun, tousled looks. I personally love the “Way Out Super Hair Glue” and the “Punk Out Molding Gunk” — both  great for the occasional mohawk!  For hair styling tips and inspiration, check out Modern Salon.
