Upcoming opportunities abound for artists, writers, and musicians in Milwaukee. The Pfister Hotel is looking for a new Artist-in-Residence, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are opening up for Milwaukee youth submissions, and a century-old music club seeks new performers.
The Pfister Hotel opens applications for the next Artist-in-Residence
The Pfister Holel is looking for its next Artist-in-Residence. The three-year-old program features a working art studio and gallery that is open to hotel guests and visitors. Artist interaction and the ability to witness the evolution of each piece first-hand gives visitors an experience as well as the visual of art.
The Artist-in-Residence will be chosen from a pool of highly qualified candidates based on the artistic process, personality and a public vote. The next artist will move into the studio space on April 1, 2011 and will work at the hotel for one year.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
Milwaukee is hosting the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards through the Still Waters Collective.
The competition is open to students grades 7 – 12, who can submit their work in 11 categories: dramatic script, humor, journalism, personal essay/memoir, persuasive writing, poetry, novel writing, science fiction/fantasy, short story, short fiction, and portfolio for graduating seniors.
Winners receive awards at a performance showcase this spring, as well as scholarships for summer writing camps. They can also earn national awards, which include college scholarships and publication in an annual anthology presented by Scholastic Books.
Entries are due by Jan. 7, 2010. Go to their website to register entries.
MacDowell Club seeks new musicians
The Milwaukee music performance group the MacDowell Club will hold auditions for classically-trained musicians (composers, instrumentalists,vocalists, pianists, and organists). The Club, currently in its 101st season, presents its members in an annual series of free-to-the-public programs throughout the Greater Milwaukee community during its concert season and holds occasional house concerts in private homes for Club members and their guests each spring and fall.
Applications are due by Dec. 31. Requirements, applications forms, and more information can be found on the MacDowell Club’s website. The auditions will be held on Jan. 8, 2011, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Music Department of Cardinal Stritch University (6801 North Yates Road) in the Joan Steele Stein Center for Communications/Fine Arts.
