RIP Senator Kennedy
Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) died late Tuesday at his home in Hyannis Port after battling brain cancer for two years. Often called one of the most effective legislators of modern times, Kennedy was known for his ability to cross the aisle to get divisive legislation passed.
Kennedy served in the Senate for 46 years and had most recently championed health care reforms. He is also well known for his work to reform public education and improving the lives of the poor in the nation.
President Barack Obama referred to Kennedy as a friend and said “every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well-being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.”
The Kennedy family announced the death in a statement early today.
“Edward M. kennedy — the husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply — died late Tueday night. He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it. He always believed that our best days were still ahead, but it’s hard to imagine any of them without him.”
Love him or hate him, he was a force to be reckoned with and the only of his brothers fortunate enough to be able to dedicate a long career to his political ideals. Godspeed, Mr. Kennedy.
