The Brewcity Battlestars, a B-Team of skaters from the four teams that make up the Brewcity Bruisers league, played their first bout in Appleton against the Paper Dolls. The Paper Dolls are one of three teams that make up the Fox Cityz Foxz league.

I headed up into God’s country with Brian Jacobson, one of ThirdCoast Digest’s fine writers and editors — also famously known as Bruiser ref Blur Radial. We arrived at the venue, Player’s Choice sports venue, located in the middle of a classic up nort’ setting, the farm.

I was glad to see the bout MC’d by our own Bruiser Gloria Hole and punk rock weirdo icon Rev. Norb.
Before the Battlestar debut, the Foxz’s other two teams skated off. The Rollergirl Regiment, lead by Captain Secretary of Skate, beat the Pushy Posse 64 to 59.

Up next, the Battlestars, lead by Captain Sevo and Co-Captain Bionika assembled the brew crew to take on the Paper Dolls, who had the Foxz’s best record this season with 6 wins, 0 losses. The Paper Dolls are lead by captain Sixx Toe Foo, and co-captains Lolly Pop Ya and Tinker Belt.

The Battlestars quickly flew into the lead with some fast and furious skating from jammers Femaldehyde, Artillery Shell, Sevo, Betty Clobber, Apple Smacks and Bionika. The team is composed of a good mix of new skaters and vets from all four teams. I asked jammer Apple Smacks for comments on the Battlestar’s first venture.

“I am so proud of them. That game was their very first time ever playing together. They never even had a practice that included the whole team. Kat Scratch Fever, Betty Clobber, and myself filled in from the all-star team and I am sure we would all agree, the Battlestars played well together. There was communicating in the pack and jamming at the speed of light and on top of it they are a super fun and fine group of ladies!” Smacks told me.

By the half, the Battlestars had developed a solid lead of 69-25. The Paper Dolls jammers, Switchblade Hunni, Tartelette, Lolly Pop Ya, Woman O’ War, and Anya B. Hinds put in good turns jamming, but the point void grew as the Battlestars broke the scoreboard and won 129-60. Not bad for a first bout as a team!
