MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin’s state-chartered credit unions reported sound financial performance through the first quarter of 2026, according to data released today by the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI). As of March 31, 2026, there were 97 state-chartered credit unions, two federal credit unions, and a corporate credit union serving Wisconsin residents.

At the end of the first quarter, total assets for Wisconsin’s state-chartered credit unions rose to $72.4 billion. This is an increase of $2.0 billion since year-end 2025. Over the same time, loans outstanding grew by almost $549.2 million, and shares and deposits rose $1.9 billion. This resulted in a decrease in the loan-to-share ratio to 89.36% from 91.32% at year-end 2025.

In the three months ending on March 31, 2026:

  • Net worth to assets decreased to 10.84%;
  • Delinquent loan to total loan ratio was 0.64%, a decrease from the year-end 2025 ratio of 0.77%;
  • Net income was strong at over $193.8 million, 1.09% return on average assets compared to 1.01% in 2025; and
  • Growth ratios were all positive.

“Through the first quarter, Wisconsin’s state-chartered credit unions continue to exhibit sound financial performance,” said DFI Office of Credit Union’s Deputy Director Troy Kaja. “Our state’s credit unions have experienced strong earnings and even stronger asset growth during the first quarter of 2026, which led to a slight decrease in the capital ratio. Delinquency continues to trend downward, and loan growth remains positive. Overall, Wisconsin state-chartered credit unions continue to be a source of stability for their credit union members and communities.”
