Wisconsin DMV adds Saturday hours in Milwaukee

Milwaukee is home to six Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Customer Service Centers and three offer Saturday hours throughout October. These locations are on key thoroughfares that use the Milwaukee County Transit System.

Milwaukee DMVs with Saturday hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., include:

·       Milwaukee-Northwest DMV Service Center
7301 W. Mill Road

·       Milwaukee-Southwest DMV Service Center
5500 W. Grange Avenue

·       Milwaukee Downtown DMV Service Center
819 N. 6th Street

“DMV’s effort to safely open more service centers in convenient locations is critically important for ensuring Wisconsinites can get what they need even during these challenging times,” Governor Tony Evers said. “By ensuring we have more DMV locations that are close and easily accessible to mass transit, we’re also ensuring folks can get essential identification they need to vote and work.”

Milwaukee Downtown State Office Building adds Wednesdays and Saturdays in October

The Milwaukee Downtown DMV service center, 819 N. 6th Street, closed in March due to safety concerns regarding COVID-19. DMV worked with the Wisconsin Department of Administration to ensure that the service center could reopen safely. It is now open to the public on Wednesdays throughout October, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., as well as Saturdays.

“It’s important to ensure DMV services are available in the heart of Milwaukee and throughout the state,” WisDOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson said. “While many of our services can be completed online, walk-in sites located along mass transit routes are important to customers who may not have access to a computer or the internet. The downtown DMV in Milwaukee is within walking distance for many and accessible by several bus routes.”

Milwaukee County, with a population of approximately 948,201, has six permanent DMV locations, which serve roughly 158,000 customers each. These DMV locations are served by Milwaukee County Transit System buses.

DMV addresses safety concerns

Wisconsin DMVs have additional safety measures in place to protect the health of customers and staff. All staff wear masks and are behind protective plastic. Visual reminders, including posters, guides on the floor, and limiting the number of customers inside help further promote safe social distancing.

For people over the age 60, a population group vulnerable to COVID-19, DMV has extended the deadline to renew their driver licenses until at least November 23, 2020.

“No customer should risk their health in order to get the identification they need to vote,” Barbara Beckert with Disability Rights Wisconsin said. “Opening DMV locations, implementing safety protocols, and extending deadlines to renew driver licenses are important steps to help voters with disabilities and older adults have better representation at the ballot box.”
