Vukmir veterans’ tuition bill now law

Walker signs bill to reimburse Guard members for full tuition

MADISON, Wis. — A bill authored by Sen. Leah Vukmir, R–Brookfield, and Rep. Mike Kuglitsch, R–New Berlin, that fixes a loophole and requires reimbursement for veterans’ full tuition costs was signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker on Wednesday.

“When we make promises to the brave men and women who serve our country, we must keep them,” Vukmir said. “This bill, now law, is just one small way we can show our deep appreciation for those who opt to wear the uniform and serve our country.”

On occasion, a glitch in the reimbursement process failed to cover the additional costs of differential tuition. At University of Wisconsin System schools, differential tuition may be added to help support the costs of certain programs, such as business or engineering.

“I give special thanks for those who serve our country through the National Guard,” Vukmir said. “I’m glad this solution is now law and our veterans won’t have to take out as many costly student loans.”

The bill also ensures service members are reimbursed in a timely manner, which provides the financial flexibility to use reimbursements toward the subsequent semester.
