VB Falls in Four at No. 4 Stanford
STANFORD, Calif. – The Marquette University volleyball team (2-3) fell to No. 4 Stanford (4-0) in four sets Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion.
Carson Tyler and Tani Juric led Marquette with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Emma Parks also reached double figures with 11 kills. Luanna Markus directed the offense with 36 assists and added four kills, five digs and two blocks. Molly Welge contributed six kills on a team-best .294 hitting percentage and matched Markus with two blocks, while Emi Juric anchored the back row with a team-high 13 digs. Avery Helms added nine digs and a career-high two service aces as the Golden Eagles totaled 46 kills and 51 digs in the match.
Marquette battled throughout the opening set after overcoming an early deficit with a 5-0 run fueled by Tyler and Markus. The Golden Eagles received kills from Tyler, Markus, Emma Parks, Tani Juric and Molly Welge, while an Emi Juric service ace helped keep the set close. Marquette erased a late two-point deficit to tie the set at 18-18, but Stanford closed on a 7-2 run to take the opener, 25-20.
Marquette stayed even with Stanford through the first half of the second set, using kills from Welge, Tyler, and Schmidt to build a 9-7 lead. Avery Helms added a service ace during the run, but Stanford answered with a 7-1 surge to take control. The Golden Eagles continued to battle behind Welge and Tani Juric, but were unable to close the gap as the Cardinal claimed the set, 25-18.
Marquette responded in the third set with its strongest performance of the match, racing out to a 7-2 lead behind kills from Tani Juric and Tyler. The Golden Eagles continued to build their advantage through strong play at the net, including blocks from Welge, Markus, Schmidt and Parks, and pushed the lead to as many as nine points. Stanford narrowed the gap late, but Marquette stayed in control to close out a 25-20 victory and extend the match.
Marquette kept the fourth set close early, getting kills from Carson Tyler, Emma Parks, Luanna Markus, Molly Welge and Tani Juric to stay within a point at 6-5. After Stanford used a 4-0 run to create separation, the Golden Eagles continued to fight behind Juric’s offense and a block from Markus and Welge that cut the deficit to 14-10. Marquette was unable to generate another sustained run, however, as Stanford pulled away late to take the set, 25-12, and clinch the match.

Marquette returns to the Al McGuire Center for their home opener this Friday, Sept. 11, to begin a weekend home-and-home series with Illinois. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT, with the match being broadcast live on FS1.
