UWM presents Bright Star

By - Sep 26th, 2024 04:45 pm

Milwaukee, WI – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts opens its 2024-2025 season with a production of Bright Star, the Tony-nominated musical with a heartfelt, bluegrass-infused score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. Live music is performed onstage by Frogwater, a beloved Milwaukee-based duo known for their bluegrass, old time, Celtic, and folk music. Performances are October 9-13.

Inspired by a true story, Bright Star is set against the rich backdrop of the American South during the 1920s and 1940s. It follows the journey of Alice Murphy, whose deep connection to her Appalachian roots weaves through this moving tale of love, loss, and redemption.

This production is directed by Raeleen McMillion, an accomplished director and member of the Peck School of the Arts faculty. McMillion’s personal history growing up in Appalachia makes her uniquely qualified to bring the world of Bright Star to life. Raised in a household and community that mirrors the setting of the show, McMillion’s experiences provide a rare, intimate lens into the stories of the region.

Media outlets are invited to explore this production through exclusive interviews with McMillion, who is available to discuss not only the production but also her personal reflections on the themes of the show and their resonance with her own Appalachian upbringing. Her background offers a compelling angle on the authenticity and emotional depth infused into this performance.
