Under new ownership, East Side German tavern to celebrate grand reopening
Mayor Barrett to tap keg at Von Trier’s ceremonial "Tapping of the Keg" event
Milwaukee, Wis. — May 10, 2019 — Iconic German tavern and biergarten Von Trier is now under new ownership, with a grand reopening event scheduled for Tuesday, May 14. The new owners of Von Trier will kick off the event with a ceremonial “Tapping of the Keg” at 5 p.m.
The East Side establishment, located at 2235 N. Farwell Ave., was purchased this spring by Brian Eft, co-owner of O’Brien’s Irish Pub, and Mark Zierath, co-owner of Jackson’s Blue Ribbon Pub. Through their restaurant group Black Gate LLC, they bought the restaurant from former owners John and Cindy Sidoff on May 8.
At the Tapping of the Keg event, Mayor Tom Barrett will tap a keg of Hofbrauhaus-Freising Jaegerbier. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
“We could not be more excited to continue the tradition of Von Trier,” Eft and Zierath said in a statement. “We are so grateful to John and Cindy for this business opportunity. We also truly appreciate the decision they made to keep Von Trier as it is: an iconic German tavern on Milwaukee’s east side.
“Please stop by and congratulate John and Cindy as they start the next chapter of their lives and help us continue the Von Trier story.”
Eft and Zierath plan to expand the kitchen to accommodate changes to the craft cocktail menu and food offerings, but will otherwise maintain Von Trier as the tavern Milwaukeeans have known it to be since 1978, they said. They will continue to focus on serving an array of German imports, creative cocktails and German cuisine.
Von Trier will be closed Sunday, May 12 and Monday, May 13 and will reopen Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
