Tom Tiffany’s Vote Against Juneteenth Shows He Is Too Extreme to Lead Wisconsin
MILWAUKEE – In 2021, Tom Tiffany voted against legislation establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday, making him the only member of Wisconsin’s congressional delegation to oppose recognizing one of the most important milestones in American history, a decision that underscores Tiffany’s extreme views and unwillingness to acknowledge the full scope of American history – or the communities whose experiences are central to it.
“Juneteenth is not just a celebration of Black history. It is a celebration of American history and a recognition that our state and our country are stronger when every community is seen, heard, and respected,” said David Crowley. “Tom Tiffany’s vote against Juneteenth shows where his governing priorities are. If he cannot recognize the importance of a day that means so much to so many Wisconsinites, it raises serious questions about whether he is willing to listen to communities outside his political base. A governor must be prepared to represent every corner of this state and every person who calls Wisconsin home. Tiffany’s record shows he is simply too extreme and too out of touch to do that.”
For millions of Americans, including many families across Wisconsin, Juneteenth is both a celebration and a reflection on the long struggle to build a nation where everyone has the chance to succeed. The overwhelming bipartisan support for recognizing Juneteenth reflected a simple understanding that American history belongs to all Americans.
Tom Tiffany chose to reject that consensus.
At a time when leaders should be working to bring people together around a shared understanding of our history, Tiffany stood alone among Wisconsin’s federal representatives and voted against recognizing a day that carries profound meaning for Black communities and for anyone who believes America’s story is strengthened when every voice is acknowledged.
As Milwaukee County Executive, Crowley has built a record of working with communities across lines of race, geography, and ideology to improve public safety, expand economic opportunity, strengthen local governments, and deliver results for working families. His approach reflects the reality of modern Wisconsin, where success depends on leaders who are willing to listen, build trust, and govern inclusively.
The contrast could not be clearer. While David Crowley believes every Wisconsinite deserves a voice in shaping the future of the state, Tom Tiffany continues to embrace a politics that narrows the conversation and excludes communities that deserve representation and respect.
