Three Spectacular, Rarely Seen Private Gardens in Milwaukee County Will Be Open to the Public July 30-31

By - Jul 1st, 2022 04:13 pm

Visit three different gardens totaling more than 11 acres in River Hills and Bayside on July 30 and 31 as part of the national Open Days garden tour. Self-guided tours are available 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Each garden has unique features. The Tsai Garden offers a painterly landscape of unexpected vignettes including colorful flowers, shade plants, and evergreens, all contained in a suburban lot. A visit to The Robbins Garden includes a prairie garden, an apiary, the art studio of Marion Coffey (subject of a one-woman exhibition at the Museum of Wisconsin Art through July 10), and a formal English garden. Tour a two-acre vineyard of 500 vines of winter-hardy grapes at The Vineyard at River Hills, as well as a wildlife pond, shade and sun perennial borders, a vegetable and cutting garden, and espaliered apple and pear trees.

Open Days is co-sponsored by the Milwaukee Art Museum Garden Club in collaboration with the national Garden Conservancy. Proceeds help support the Club’s Milwaukee area community service projects. These include planting and weeding the prairies at Lakeshore State Park, maintaining the labyrinth at Alice’s Garden, nature-themed programming for the students at MPS’s Riley School, and participating in the plant share event for Habitat for Humanity homeowners.
