The Goats Are Back at Lynden
The Lynden Sculpture Garden is pleased to announce the return of the goats. They arrived yesterday and are already chewing their way through the buckthorn. We expect them to stay somewhere between two and four weeks, and we now know that what they will be doing is browsing in different areas to control woody invasive species. This is one leg of our prairie restoration plan that also includes targeted treatments and prairie burns.
The goats are on the west side of the property, pretty much where they were in the summer. You can usually get a good view of them from the edge of the lawn.
A few safety issues to consider:
- The goats are surrounded by an electrified fence that should not be touched by humans or canines. So if you’re coming for dog day on Saturday—and please do!—you will want to keep your dog away.
- You must not attempt to feed, pet, or taunt the goats (we have that straight from Kettle Moraine Grazing—it’s their herd of 30 goats that is currently in residence at Lynden).
A lot of activity in the natural world at Lynden just now: fall color, migrating birds, goats.
