Supervisor Eckblad Commends County Parks’ Efforts in Mitchell Airport Park Playground Replacement Project

MILWAUKEE – Supervisor Jack Eckblad is pleased to update residents on the progress of the Mitchell Airport Park Playground Replacement project, which has now completed its design phase. This marks a significant step toward modernizing one of the oldest playgrounds in the park system.

Supervisor Eckblad, who represents the area, issued the following statement:

“Building this park has been a collective effort, and it is huge that we can say the equipment has officially been ordered and that construction is likely to be completed this year. When this conversation first began in 2019 it looked likely that we would lose the playground entirely. Thank you to former Supervisor Jason Haas for getting the original funding approved. Thank you to the County Parks employees who negotiated with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to keep the park and thank you to the residents of the Airport Gardens Neighborhood who never stopped advocating. We now have a firm timeline for upgrading what may be the oldest park in Milwaukee County.”

Playground construction is scheduled to begin this fall, accounting for lead times in equipment delivery and contractor scheduling. The new playground equipment will have ADA-accessible features and will include play structures designed for children aged 2-5 and 5-12, swings, and standalone play pieces. The play area’s surface will be upgraded with a mix of poured-in-place (PIP) rubber and engineered wood fiber surfacing.

Per the FAA agreement reached in 2022, enabling the playground to remain in its current location, the renovated playground will feature an aviation theme with educational elements.
