Senator Baldwin Votes to Protect Wisconsinites’ Right to IVF
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) released the following statement after she voted to advance the Right to IVF Act:
“Wisconsin women want the right to decide if, when, and how to have a family – without interference from politicians or the government. Unfortunately, since Roe v. Wade was overturned, the Supreme Court put the right to essential family planning tools like IVF at risk – and I’m not going to stand idly by while more freedoms get stripped away,” said Senator Baldwin. “I was proud to vote to give Wisconsinites the freedom to grow their families on their own terms and am outraged that many of my colleagues didn’t listen to the vast majority of the people we represent to make this simple bill the law of the land. I will not stop fighting for women’s freedom to control their bodies, families, and future.”Americans’ access to IVF has been put in jeopardy since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In February, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that embryos are considered children under state law, prompting providers to halt fertility treatment. Today, the Senate voted to advance the Baldwin-supported Right to IVF Act to establish a nationwide right to IVF and other assisted reproductive technology (ART), as well as lower the costs of IVF treatment.
In advance of the vote, Senator Baldwin was joined by Wisconsin IVF patients to call on the Senate to pass the Right to IVF Act. Americans overwhelmingly support access to IVF, with 86% saying that IVF should be legal for women.
