MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin State Senate on Tuesday passed a bill authored by Sen. Leah Vukmir, R–Brookfield, and Rep. Mike Rohrkaste, R–Neenah, to provide access to newly engineered biological drugs.

“Wisconsin families, and especially our seniors, are paying enormous costs for prescription medications,” Vukmir said. “At a time when drug prices are an incredible burden for Wisconsinites, this bill will help consumers’ budgets stretch farther by making their prescriptions available at a cheaper price.”

Senate Bill 575 passed with bipartisan support Tuesday. The bill allows pharmacists to substitute federally approved interchangeable biosimilars that are manufactured using new biological methods. Modern technology has allowed pharmaceutical companies to design new medications. These interchangeable drugs will provide more choices for consumers and create savings, much like when consumers purchase generic versions of other medications.

“I am proud to author a bill that will pass savings on expensive medications to consumers,” Vukmir said. “This is a win for the thousands of Wisconsinites spending their hard-earned money on costly prescriptions.”
