Sailing Visionary Nick Hayes Named Program Director at the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center
(MILWAUKEE,WISCONSIN, March 10, 2022) – The Milwaukee Community Sailing Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Nick Hayes to Program Director. “We are thrilled to have Nick with his passion, expertise and exceptional skill-set join us as our Program Director to build on our many successful programs,” said Holly Church, MCSC Director.
Hayes caught the sailing bug as a child at a summer camp and sailing has been an integral part of his life. He has sailed scows, Solings, Lasers, iceboats, sport-boats, multihulls and big boats on the Great Lakes and three oceans.
Nick and his wife Angela purchased their first sailboat in 1986, the year before they were married, and have cruised and raced competitively as a family ever since. Their philosophy has always been to invite, encourage and teach new sailors, both kids and adults, on their boats. The Hayeses have successfully campaigned their boats Syrena and Anafi and consistently perform at or near the top in most events. Hayes is also a member of the crew of Mainstreet, one of Lake Michigan’s most successful racing programs, competing in buoy and offshore races for over 20 years.
Hayes authored the book “Saving Sailing” in 2009 which presents an appealing blueprint for the revival of family sailing – and other quality uses of free time for rewarding lifelong pastimes. He has traveled the globe speaking and conducting workshops for the sailing community sharing ways to build participation, diversity and access to sailing for youth and families. Hayes writes a regular column in Sailing Magazine celebrating the sport of sailing. Daughters Kate and Elizabeth grew up sailing with their parents, sailed with club teams in high school and college and were instructors at the Sailing Center. Nick served on the MCSC Board of Directors between 2005 and 2013, chairing the Program Committee and as a member of the Design/Build team as new facilities were built. Most recently, Hayes co-founded the water technology company Wellntel. Before that, he worked as an executive in the power and electronics industries.
MCSC Board President Paul Baldino said, “We are fortunate to have someone with Nick’s experience and reputation in the sailing community to direct our programs, he has always been an amazing advocate for sailing, especially with young people, he will undoubtedly serve as a great catalyst with our instructors and our member volunteers.”
