REMINDER: Last Day to Rake Your Leaves into the Street is Saturday, November 15, 2014
Last day to request a special pick-up for brush is November 30
City of Milwaukee residents have until Saturday, November 15, 2014 to rake their leaves into the curb lanes on their street.
City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works (DPW) Sanitation crews will continue to collect leaves until Wednesday, November 26 as it takes approximately two weeks to make a complete sweep of the entire city.
In addition, November 30 is the last day to request a special pick-up for brush piles.
Leaves and brush, along with other yard waste, are banned from landfills and must not be placed in garbage or recycling carts. DPW collects leaves, brush and yard waste separately from garbage and composts it, which conserves natural resources while saving the City money. Residents are also encouraged to mulch leaves, and leave grass clippings on the lawn. This saves time and money, and adds nutrients to the soil.
Tips for a successful fall leaf collection:
- Keep leaf piles away from storm drains and sewer grates in the street
- Place garden debris on top of leaf piles
- Do not put leaves in plastic bags
- Do not put leaves in garbage carts
- Do not put brush into the street – call 286-CITY (2489) by November 30 for a pick-up
YEAR-ROUND DISPOSAL OF LEAVES AND BRUSH: City residents can take their leaves and brush any time of the year to one of DPW’s Self Help Centers located at 6660 N. Industrial Road and 3879 W. Lincoln Ave. For more information on Self Help Center hours of operation and items accepted at Self Help, call 286-CITY (2489) or go to www.city.milwaukee.gov/mpw.
Sanitation staff collects an average of 15,000 tons of leaves each year. Last year 15,250 tons of leaves were collected.
