Registration opens March 4 for MPS Summer Academy
Summer Classes and Activities to Inspire Learning Take Place in June and July at Select Schools around Milwaukee
(MILWAUKEE, WI) – Signup starts Monday, March 4, for Summer Academy at Milwaukee Public Schools. The summer classes for students from K5 to grade 12 take place in June and July at select schools around the city.
Children in 5-year-old kindergarten to grade 8 can take part in a five-week Summer Academy exploration camp. It’s held June 24 to July 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. weekdays (closed July 4 and 5). Students learn arts, music, social studies, STEM, reading, mathematics, and a world language through activities, special programs, and field trips. Services are available at some sites for Extended School Year (ESY, for children with special education needs), Montessori, bilingual, and English as a Second Language (ESL). Breakfast and lunch are provided, and childcare before and after programs is available.Summer Academy also helps students in grades 6 to 12 catch up or get ahead, with credit-bearing classes and accelerating learning. Dual enrollment courses are available so students can earn both high school and college credits. Summer Academy for this age group is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Offerings vary by site and session.
Summer Academy Session I, for high school students, is June 13-July 2 (no school June 19). Session 2, for grades 7-12, is June 24-July 25 (no school July 4-5). Breakfast and lunch are provided; Milwaukee County Transit System bus passes are provided on the first day of Summer Academy.
In addition to traditional classes in mathematics, science, reading, world cultures, and other fields, Summer Academy offers courses that are designed to engage students, tap into their imagination, and teach them new skills.
Some of the specialty courses for grades 1 through 12 include:
- Beach Volleyball and Beach Flag Football
- Cake Making
- Certified Nursing Assistant
- Computer Apps in Art (a digital art class)
- Forensic Science
- History of Rap
- Intro to Podcasting
- Musical Theater
- STEM GL!TCH, a coding class that enables students to design their own escape room in a fictional world
Registration closes May 31, but seats can fill quickly. Summer Academy is free for Milwaukee residents.
