Property assessments to be discussed at special Judiciary and Legislation Committee meeting

News release from Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs

By - May 7th, 2020 02:12 pm

The recent increase in property assessments across Milwaukee will be discussed at a special meeting of the Common Council’s Judiciary and Legislation Committee scheduled for Monday, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. Common Council file #200030 – Communication from the Office of the Assessor relating to 2020 assessments – was introduced by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs. Co-sponsors of the file include Alderman Cavalier Johnson, Alderman José G. Pérez, Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd, Alderman Khalif J. Rainey and Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II.

“Residents across the city experienced frustration and confusion when they found out property values increased in 2020, including those in my district where residential property values increased the most. Given the economic hardships many are facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic those feelings are understandable,” said Alderwoman Coggs. “Now more than ever transparency in government is vital, and I introduced this communication file so the Assessor’s Office could provide relevant and timely information to the public on how assessments were conducted, what steps residents can take to appeal, and answer any other questions from members.”

Those wishing to appeal their property assessment must do so by 4:45 p.m. on Monday, May 18. Information on appealing an assessment can be found at milwaukee.gov/AppealsandAssistance674.htm.

The special meeting of the Judiciary and Legislation Committee will be televised live by the City Channel via streaming video on the city website at milwaukee.gov/CityChannel. It can also be viewed on Spectrum Cable and on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee.
