Pet Sitter or Boarding Facility? Tips on How to Choose

By - Jun 9th, 2020 07:03 am

Milwaukee, Wis. – Unable to take your pet on the family vacation? You’re not alone.

Finding a reliable pet sitter or dog kennel can be very time consuming, stressful, or even expensive for some pet owners who travel often.

There are so many options from doggie daycare to dog hotels. How do you determine the right fit?

First, figure out what will work best for you and your pet. Will your pet be fine relaxing most of the day, or do they need a lot of exercise? Would you rather have a pet sitter come to your home, or does a pet boarding facility put you at more ease?

BBB offers this advice to help pet owners choose the best care for their four-legged family members.

Pet Sitters:

  • Ask for references from friends, neighbors, or even your veterinarian.
  • Determine the cost. Some pet sitters are willing to do non-pet related chores — such as bringing in the mail, watering plants, turning lights on or off, or even staying overnight — while others may charge extra.
  • Have the sitter visit your home before you leave. Go over procedures, show them how to safely lock and access your home, and acquaint them with your pet.
  • Ask the pet sitter for personal references, and then call them to inquire about the quality of pet care they received.
  • Leave a pet sitter checklist so they don’t forget anything and and so they have easy access to your contact information in case of emergency. Leave veterinary or animal hospital information and go over any medications your pet may need.
  • If you are using a service, check BBB.org to read reviews and find a trustworthy pet sitter near you.

Boarding Service:

Ask for references from friends, neighbors, or even your veterinarian.

  • Check the facility for cleanliness and safety of the kennel and cages.
  • Ask if the kennel is properly licensed. Research your state’s specific requirements to see if the kennel you are considering meets those requirements.
  • Make sure the facility requires all pets to have proof of immunizations, and ask about procedures for flea and tick control.
  • Determine the cost. The cost can vary depending on the number of amenities that are offered, such as 24/7 live webcams to see your pet. Some facilities could also charge extra for things like daily walks or weekend drop off or pick up times.
  • Find out if you need to bring your pet’s dog bed, blankets, toys, special food, medications, etc.
  • Ask about procedures in case your pet has a medical emergency.
  • Check BBB.org to read reviews and find a trustworthy kennel near you.
