Our Children Deserve To Live
MADISON — At least three people are dead, more injured, and countless others will never be the same after a shooting Monday morning at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. This tragedy took place two days and 12 years after tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary.
Sen. Kelda Roys (D-Madison), whose district includes this school, issued the following statement:
“At least three Madisonians lost their lives today in a school shooting. My heart goes out to the children, staff, and families affected, all of whom are victims of this unthinkable tragedy. Our community is hurting, like so many other communities that have suffered the consequences of mass gun violence.
“Right now, it’s hard to think of a greater moral failing as a nation and society than our inaction and unwillingness to keep our children safe from gun violence. We do not have to accept this as an ordinary part of life. No other country does. Indeed – guns are the number one cause of death for American children, and that is a policy choice.
“The frequency of these tragedies has perversely numbed too many into thinking that nothing can change. But that’s not true, and that is not acceptable to me. In this next legislative session, we can and must come together to pass reasonable gun safety measures to reduce firearm injuries and deaths. Our kids deserve it. All of us deserve to live in safety and free from the fear of gun violence. In the name of John Klang, Jonathan Brostoff, the victims of today’s shooting, and all those whose lives or loved ones have been lost to gun violence, we must choose to love our children more than we value unfettered access to guns.”
