New appointments to Community Collaborative Commission

Statement of Common Council President Cavalier Johnson June 10, 2020

By - Jun 10th, 2020 09:37 am

I am proud to announce my appointments to the Community Collaborative Commission (CCC), a body created to provide a forum for and solicit community input regarding policing and law enforcement policies, procedures, and practices in Milwaukee. In particular, this commission will focus on the treatment of members of minority, LGBTQ, disability, and other historically underserved and underrepresented communities.

During this critical and timely moment in history, these appointments are essential to helping move Milwaukee forward and to building critical trust in the community.

My appointments are:

The CCC’s responsibilities include:

  • Seek community input on Police Department operations to improve trust between law enforcement and city residents
  • Conduct an annual survey of Milwaukee residents belonging to communities that are statistically more likely to interact with members of the Police Department, about the residents’ views on police-community relations
  • Identify and evaluate the effectiveness of progressive policing strategies deployed in other cities
  • Solicit research and expert assistance as needed, in relation to reducing disparities and improving police-community relations
  • Communicate community concerns regarding law enforcement policies, procedures, and practices in Milwaukee to the Police Department and the Fire and Police Commission
  • Present updates to the Common Council on a quarterly basis
