MPD Officer Shot
MILWAUKEE, WI – Today, Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at approximately 9:21 a.m., Milwaukee Police responded to a domestic violence-related subject with a gun call on the 1800 block of W. Fairmount Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers engaged in dialogue with the suspect in an attempt to obtain cooperation. Officers attempted to approach at the front of the residence when the suspect fired shots at the officers. Several officers returned fire and then some officers relocated to the rear of the residence at which time the suspect fired more shots in their direction, subsequently striking an officer. No one was struck by the officers’ gunfire.
The suspect retreated back into the residence and refused to surrender. At the time, four children, were also in the residence. A tactical set-up was established and negotiators were summoned.
After several hours of negotiations, the suspect, a 25-year-old male, released the children and surrendered without further incident. A firearm was recovered.
The injured officer is a 38-year-old male with over 16 years of service. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries. An additional officer sustained a minor injury but did not receive medical treatment.
The Milwaukee Police Department Homicide Division is leading the investigation. Criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the upcoming days. The investigation is fluid and ongoing.
