More testing facilities and new website enhance service for emissions program customers

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announces improvements to the Wisconsin Vehicle Inspection Program (WIVIP) to help customers in southeast Wisconsin conveniently complete their required vehicle emissions test. Improvements include the addition of two, new centralized inspection facilities with extended weekend hours and an updated website to help customers efficiently locate a nearby inspection facility.

“Customers have asked for an easier way to find emissions inspection facilities and expanded weekend hours to complete their emissions tests. We’re proud to offer these enhancements to meet our customers’ needs,” DMV Administrator Tommy Winkler said. “As WisDOT continues to innovate and look to better serve our customers, we’re excited to see this program move forward and provide greater ease and convenience.”

The improved website offers customers the ability to:

• Easily locate emissions inspection facilities with a new interactive map feature
• View and activate features from your mobile phone
• View inspection facility hours and contact information through the listing and map
• Understand steps to take after a failed emissions test
• Contact the WIVIP for questions or concerns

In addition to approved, independently owned emissions inspection facilities throughout southeastern Wisconsin, two new WIVIP operated centralized emissions inspection facilities will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The locations in high-demand areas are:

• WIVIP South Station
  9300 S. 27th St.
  Oak Creek, WI 53154

• WIVIP North Station
  8718 W. Brown Deer Rd
  Brown Deer, WI 53244

The new website also helps customers locate recognized repair facilities who employ technicians formally trained in emissions diagnosis and repairs to help fix emissions problems on vehicles that don’t pass inspection.

The seven southeastern Wisconsin counties where emissions inspections are required before vehicle registrations can be renewed are Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Washington and Waukesha. The emissions inspections, conducted by licensed emissions inspectors, involve connecting a scan tool to the vehicle’s computer and downloading emission control systems information. The program was implemented in 1984 in response to federal Clean Air Act requirements.

The WIVIP is administered by WisDOT and managed by contractor OPUS Inspections (OPUS), Inc.
