The East Side Business Improvement District is hosting its 12th annual Summer Soulstice Music Festival on Saturday, June 23 from noon to midnight on East North Avenue, between Prospect and Oakland.

This year, the festival has added a Family Stage and Activity Area on Murray Avenue. From noon to 6 p.m., the area will feature an energetic line-up of family friendly entertainment. The day includes:

  • mini soccer clinics and autograph sessions conducted by the Milwaukee Wave
  • a meet-and-greet with players from the Milwaukee Mustangs and the Fillies Dance Team, along with prize and game ticket giveaways
  • a Guess the Flavors competition at the Whole Foods Gelato & Sorbet Tasting Booth
  • hands-on pottery classes conducted by Murray Hill Pottery
  • appearances by Bernie Brewer and two of the Racing Sausages
  • a bevy of activities and adventures at the Kohl’s Design It! Lab from Discovery World
  • face painting and balloon art
  • rotating acts by magicians, musicians and jugglers on the children’s stage

Visitors can browse a collection of classic and sports cars in an exhibition hosted by Gilbert Brown, the Green Bay Packers’ Hall of Fame player. Four bocce ball courts will be set up in front of the Hotel Foster so anyone can try their hand at this classic game that dates back to the Roman Empire. A BMX exhibition will start shortly after noon on North Avenue in front of Cans and Vitucci’s. At 2:00 p.m., there will be a Burrito Eating Contest on the East Stage sponsored by Replay.

The music starts at 1:00 p.m. but by 6:00 p.m. it really takes off! Three stages kick into high gear with a diverse offering of up-and-coming and award-winning Wisconsin-based bands. Herman Astro was the winner of 88.9’s Catchiest Song of the Year in 2010. Rusty Ps are three-time WAMI award winners and six-time winners of Shepherd Express Best of Milwaukee Award. I’m Not a Pilot won Shepherd Express’s 2010 Best Rock Band award, Maritime has a national recording contract with Dangerbird Records and Jeanna Salzer was voted the best female vocalist in 2009 and 2010 by Shepherd Express readers.
