Milwaukee Wins First Round Contest To Host Influential Social Media Conference

Community Support Needed to Help Milwaukee Beat Branson, Mo. in Second Round

By - Mar 15th, 2013 02:34 pm

Thanks to votes from more than 1,300 proud Milwaukeeans, Milwaukee has secured a spot as an “Elite Eight” destination in the running to host the 2013 Social Media Tourism Symposium. Now Milwaukee goes head-to-head against Branson, Mo. in a bracket-style competition beginning Monday, March 18 – and that means it’s time to rally more votes for a Milwaukee win.

The 2013 Social Media Tourism Symposium (SoMeT), an annual convention attended by hundreds of savvy social media professionals in the tourism industry, will take place in November. The meeting brings attendees to its host city from all across the nation to discuss social media best practices, trends and tools specific to the tourism industry, pumping an estimated $350,000 into the local economy. The selection process for the host destination, a tournament-style vote via social media, requires the help of thousands to land the business.

Community pride in the first round of voting was strong, helping Milwaukee sail past five of 13 destinations that were eliminated from the running based on vote totals. Milwaukee scored third-highest overall, behind Hunstville, Ala. and Missoula, Mont. Other destinations that survived the first vote include Cleveland, Ohio, St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Fla., Branson, Mo., Grand Rapids, Mich., and Indianapolis, Ind.

On Monday, March 18, Milwaukee will challenge Branson, Mo. in a 12-hour match with only one destination moving forward in the competition and advancing to the third round of voting.

VISIT Milwaukee is encouraging Milwaukee to band together, show its pride and vote MKE for a win against Branson!
