Meet Brad Schimel: Abysmal Record on Public Safety

MADISON, Wis. — With the Wisconsin Supreme Court election less than three months away, we’re here to re-introduce extreme far-right candidate Brad Schimel. As the worst Attorney General in state history, Wisconsinites rejected Brad Schimel after only one term due to his extreme views and for failing victims across Wisconsin.

Brad Schimel doesn’t take Wisconsinites’ safety seriously. As Attorney General, he let violent offenders roam the streets freely while thousands of untested rape kits fell through the cracks. And as District Attorney, and later circuit court judge, Schimel went easy on child predators and handed down light sentences to domestic abusers. With a long record of failed leadership in public safety, Brad Schimel does not belong on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Here’s what you need to know about extreme politician Brad Schimel’s abysmal public safety record:

• As District Attorney in Waukesha County, Schimel was soft on prosecuting child sexual assault crimes. Schimel cut down plea deals for child molesters and even blamed child sexual assault survivors for their own “bad judgment.”
• In his first two years as Attorney General, Brad Schimel tested only 9 out of over 6,000 untested rape kits. This allowed violent offenders to walk free and delayed justice for thousands of victims of sexual assault—including more than 2,000 children. Schimel went as far as to lie to Wisconsinites and falsely claim that there was no backlog.
• Schimel refused to condemn a right-wing dark money special interest group for running a political attack ad that included information that could be used to identify child victims of sexual assault. Instead, Schimel merely called the group to express his “concerns.”
• As a judge, Brad Schimel has given light sentences to convicted domestic abusers, including sentencing several to no prison time, in which the offenders would go on to commit domestic violence reoffenses.

“Throughout his time as Attorney General, Backlog Brad Schimel failed victims of sexual assault by neglecting to test thousands of rape kits in Wisconsin,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Deputy Communications Director Haley McCoy. “From giving light sentences to domestic abusers and child predators to blaming assault survivors for their abusers’ crimes, Brad Schimel has a glaring record of failing to take Wisconsinites’ safety seriously.”
