Milwaukee, Sept. 10, 2019 – The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Cancer Center Community Outreach and Engagement program will host Vida y Esperanza 2019: Triunfando con Cancer (Life and Hope: Conquering Life with Cancer) on Saturday, Sept. 14. This will be southeastern Wisconsin’s first event specifically for members of the Latinx community who have been touched by cancer, including those living with cancer at all stages of treatment, recovery and survivorship and their caregivers, support networks, families and friends.

The mission of Vida y Esperanza is two-fold, according to Ana Manriquez, a community research coordinator at MCW studying cancer disparities and coordinator of the event: To celebrate and empower Latinx community members whose lives have been touched by cancer in a safe and intentional space, and to stimulate a foundation of support, trust and collaboration amongst community members touched by cancer and the institutions, entities and organizations that support them.

The event will offer a variety of community resources including glucose and blood pressure screenings, demonstrations from the 16th Street Community Health Center Healthy Choices Program, haircuts, performances by local groups, giveaways and more. The event and all services are free of charge, childcare will be provided, and food will be available from Milwaukee’s Algo Dulce. Vida y Esperanza 2019 will take place Saturday, September 14th, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Augustine Preparatory Academy, 2607 S. 5th St. in Milwaukee.
