Marquette Faces No. 17 Baylor Before Hosting Loyola
Golden Eagles put unbeaten start on the line Thursday before returning home to Valley Fields
The Marquette University women’s soccer team (3-0-3, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) returns to action following an 11-day break when it travels to No. 17 Baylor (5-1-0, 0-0-0 B12) on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. CT. The Golden Eagles then return home Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. CT to host Loyola (2-2-2, 0-0-0 A10).
Last Time Out
Marquette went 0-0-2 during their last two matches on Aug. 27 & Aug. 30, remaining unbeaten through six matches with consecutive scoreless draws against Milwaukee and Northern Illinois at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles opened the week with a 0-0 draw against Milwaukee on Thursday, recording 10 shots, including seven on goal. Goalkeeper Mia Hurd made three saves to record her second shutout of the season.
Marquette closed the week with another scoreless draw against Northern Illinois on Sunday, out-shooting the Huskies 19-10 and putting eight shots on goal. Hurd made five saves for her fourth shutout of the season, while Megan Murray and Emily Fix each recorded three shots. The draw extended Marquette’s unbeaten start to six matches, its first such start since 2005.
MU Remains Undefeated
Marquette is one of 40 teams nationally without a loss and one of just three BIG EAST teams that remain unbeaten in 2026.
The Golden Eagles are undefeated through their first six matches of the season (3-0-3) for the first time since 2005, when Marquette opened the year 5-0-1 with victories over No. 13 Illinois, Northwestern, Drake, Green Bay and Xavier, along with a draw against Milwaukee.
Marquette went on to win 17 of its first 20 matches that season, finishing 19-4-1 overall and 9-2-0 in BIG EAST play en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance and a Sweet 16 berth.
Hurd Earns BIG EAST Nod
On Monday, Aug. 31, the BIG EAST announced Mia Hurd as the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season.
Hurd earned the honor after anchoring Marquette’s defense to back-to-back shutouts in the Golden Eagles’ final two matches before the team’s bye week. She made three saves against Milwaukee before recording five saves against Northern Illinois, turning aside every shot on target she faced during the week. Her efforts helped Marquette earn two scoreless draws and remain unbeaten through six matches for the first time since 2005.
Hurd is currently tied for fifth in the NCAA with four shutouts this season.
Golden Eagles Without Murray
Marquette forward Megan Murray, the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer through six matches in 2026, has been called up to the Philippine Women’s National Team (PWNT) ahead of the 2026 Asian Games.
Murray joined the PWNT for its Pre-Asian Games Training Camp from Sept. 3-10 in Manila, Philippines, before traveling with the national team to the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, which will be held Sept. 14-Oct. 4 in Japan.
Defense Anchors Unbeaten Start
Marquette’s defense has been a strength through the opening six matches of the season, with MU allowing just two goals while posting four shutouts. Both goals allowed have come via penalty kicks, meaning Marquette has yet to concede a goal from open play this season.
MU’s two goals allowed through six matches mark the fewest they have surrendered through the first six matches of a season since 2007. That season, Marquette allowed just one goal through its first 10 matches en route to a 14-4-2 overall record.
Golden Eagles vs. Ranked Teams
Marquette’s last win over a ranked opponent came on Sept. 19, 2014, when the Golden Eagles defeated No. 16 Kansas, 1-0. Since then, Marquette has dropped 16 consecutive matches against ranked opponents.
Thursday’s match-up with No. 17 Baylor will mark Marquette’s first meeting with a ranked opponent this season. Under head coach Chris Allen, the Golden Eagles are 0-5 against ranked opponents.
