Make sure your packages are protected this holiday season
Statement of Alderman Lamont Westmoreland December 8, 2023
The holiday season is in full swing, and with it comes holiday shopping, or more accurately, increased online shopping and package delivery. Unfortunately, “porch pirates,” or those who steal packages from unprotected areas at places of residence, are also out in full force.
I would urge everyone to take the extra steps to ensure that the items you purchased for yourself, family, or friends remain secure. These include:
- Enable delivery notifications when available so you know when your package is scheduled for delivery and when it has been delivered.
- Attempt to coordinate deliveries when you will be home, if possible.
- When available, consider having a package delivered to a nearby pickup location.
- If you know you will not be home, ask a neighbor, friend or family member to bring your package in for you.
- Consider installing a security camera or monitor on your front porch.
- Require a signature at the time of delivery to avoid packages being left unattended.
These are just a sampling of tips that can help prevent your purchases from being stolen this time of year. Always remember to keep an eye out in your area for suspicious behavior, and alert the authorities as needed.
