July Local Employment and Unemployment Data Released

Historically low or tied July unemployment rates in 18 counties, 8 major cities and one metro area compared to July unemployment rates in previous years

MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) today released the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates of unemployment and employment statistics for Wisconsin metropolitan areas, major cities and counties in Wisconsin for July 2023.

In brief, the nonseasonally adjusted data for Wisconsin shows:

  • Metropolitan Statistical Areas: Preliminary July 2023 unemployment rates declined in all 12 Wisconsin metro areas over the month and decreased or stayed the same in 6 the 12 areas over the year.
  • Municipalities: Preliminary July 2023 unemployment rates declined or stayed the same in 34 of Wisconsin’s 35 largest cities over the month. Over the year, 19 Wisconsin cities had unemployment rates decrease or stay the same.
  • Counties: Preliminary July 2023 unemployment rates decreased or stayed the same 68 of 72 Wisconsin counties over the month and decreased or stayed the same in 48 of 72 Wisconsin counties over the year.
