Joint statement on the nomination of Amanda Avalos to the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
Common Council President Cavalier Johnson and Public Safety and Health Committee Chair Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic
During yesterday’s meeting of the Public Safety and Health Committee, Amanda Avalos’ nomination to serve on the Board of the Fire and Police Commissioners was passed on a 3-2 vote. However, members of the Common Council subsequently learned that the background check initiated by the Fire and Police Commission for Ms. Avalos was not conducted by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office as outlined in chapter 314-1 of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances.
As such, the appointment of Ms. Avalos will not be heard at today’s meeting of the Common Council as we wait for the proper background check to be completed.
We were disappointed to learn of this procedural breakdown, as were many of our colleagues, and we look forward to resuming Ms. Avalos’ confirmation process when it is appropriate to do so.
