In recognition of César E. Chávez

Statement of Common Council President José G. Pérez and Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa March 31, 2025

The last day of March annually commemorates the life and legacy of civil rights and labor activist César Chávez on his birthday. The influence and legacy of César Chávez runs deep, as his leadership in the fight to better the lives of workers inspired countless people, many of whom were disenfranchised, to seek social justice and better working conditions.

He brought people together in a movement to fight for justice and equity. He believed that organizing and collective bargaining could succeed in advancing the dignity and wellbeing of working Americans. That message still lives strong in Milwaukee, and continues to hold significance today.

While his original cause was to advocate for fair wages and better working conditions for farm workers, at a time when many within the Latino community feel uncertainty, the core message of his legacy can serve as guidance even today. We all deserve to be treated equally, and with respect and dignity.

He was a true champion for justice. We will continue to carry on that message and work that César Chávez believed in, because we know if he were with us today, that’s exactly what he would do.

Declaración del Presidente del Concejo Común José G. Pérez y la Concejal JoCasta Zamarripa

Marzo 31, 2025
