In Light of Recent Veto, Republican Lawmakers ‘Double-Down’ on their Culture Wars Targeting Wisconsin’s Transgender Youth

(MADISON) – Today, Republican legislators are holding public hearings on SB 377 & SB 379, bills which would prevent transgender athletes from participating in sports in alignment with their gender identity.

Co-chair of the Transgender Parent and Non-Binary Advocacy Caucus, Representative Melissa Ratcliff (D-Cottage Grove) released the following statement:

“I am the parent of a son who is transgender, so I know firsthand the hurt and the harm these hateful bills create. But you do not need to have a transgender child to understand how wrong it is that Republicans continue to target the trans community with bills designed to marginalize vulnerable youth. Anti-trans legislation, introduced over and over again, is cruel, unnecessary, and speaks volumes about the misplaced priorities of the Republican majority.”

In addition, Co-Chair Ryan Clancy (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement:

“It’s hard to fully comprehend how cruel these bills are. Republicans introduce legislation they know will be vetoed thus forcing our trans and non-binary communities and their loved ones to come to our State House over and over again to fight to convince law makers of their humanity. It is disgusting.

However, each and every time the Republicans do this, our vibrant and resilient advocates show up and create community and connection in the face of hatred. Seeing them organize, support and love each other through these dark moments makes me hopeful for a brighter and more accepting future for Wisconsin. I will continue to stand in solidarity with our Trans and Non-Binary Communities.”
