Hip-Hop Week 2023

On Tuesday, February 7 the Common Council adopted file #221540 – a resolution designating August 21 – 27, 2023, as Hip-Hop Week MKE in the City of Milwaukee. The file was sponsored by Alderman Khalif J. Rainey who also launched the initiative in 2018 to much success within the community in recognition of the influence and power of hip-hop culture both locally and nationally.

Hip-Hop Week will return in 2023 after a multi-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the hip-hop genre. Hip-Hop is largely considered to have originated in the Bronx in 1973, and Hip-Hop Week MKE will be one of many celebrations taking place nationally throughout the summer.

Alderman Rainey expressed his excitement for the return of Hip-Hop Week in conjunction with the 50th anniversary.

“For decades hip-hop has served as a form of artistic expression, community building, and social change. The genre has the unique ability to bring communities together and stimulate conversations about relevant issues in our society, which is exactly why I sought to launch Hip-Hop Week in 2018, and why I am equally excited for its return this year,” said Alderman Rainey. “Hip-Hop Week MKE will focus on financial literacy, civic engagement, voter registration, and healthy living, among other issues within our community. We will be looking for partners to make this year’s event the biggest and best yet, so if you’re interested please contact my office and we will work together so Milwaukee can experience the true power and influence of hip-hop.”
