Guns must be kept secure to prevent the unthinkable

Statement of Alderman Khalif J. Rainey June 20, 2019

By - Jun 20th, 2019 11:56 am

An unspeakable and preventable tragedy happened on Tuesday (June 18) when a five-year-old boy was fatally shot in a home near N. 45th and W. Concordia in the 7th District.

I am told the boy accidentally shot himself when handling a firearm that was left unsecured in the home. A man known to the boy has been arrested for child neglect.

I cannot imagine the pain the boy’s loved ones are going through, and my support and prayers are with the family at this incredibly difficult time.

Guns must NEVER be left unsecured in places where children might be able to reach them. Without a gun safety plan in place in the home there is ZERO safety!

This is the second tragic gun death of a young child in just the past few days, as a five-year-old boy died from a shooting in Kenosha on Monday. Since the end of March, eight children have been wounded or killed by gunfire in Milwaukee.

We must make gun safety a top priority to prevent more unthinkable and preventable gun deaths involving children.
