MADISON – Governor Scott Walker appointed Attorney Timothy Samuelson today to serve as a judge on the Dane County Circuit Court, replacing retiring Judge John W. Markson.

“Timothy Samuelson has established himself as a hard-working, principled, and respected attorney,” said Governor Walker. “His diverse legal background and respect for the rule of law assure me that he will make an excellent judge.”

Samuelson has served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Wisconsin Department of Justice since 2012. During his time at the Department of Justice, Samuelson has served as the Director of the Medicaid Fraud Control and Elder Abuse Unit and has also held the position of Deputy Director for the Special Litigation and Appeals Unit. Prior to his work as Assistant Attorney General, Samuelson worked as Legal Counsel for Schopf & Weiss LLP and as an Associate Attorney for Iwan Cray Huber Horstman & VanAusdal LLC, both Chicago-based firms.

Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel highly recommends Samuelson, stating, “Director Samuelson is a hard-working, highly intelligent and capable attorney. He has outstanding writing and legal analysis skills and work ethic. He respects and is committed to the rule of law.” Attorney General Schimel added, “In short, he has all of the attributes of someone who will be an excellent jurist.”

Dane County Circuit Court Judge Clayton Kawski also wrote in support of Samuelson, “I am confident that he has what it takes to run a courtroom fairly and efficiently, to make parties feel like they had their day in court, and to adeptly handle the matters before him, while staying true to the written law.” Judge Kawski added, “[h]is temperament is appropriate for the bench. Working together, I never saw him falter or let emotion control his decision making.”

Regarding Samuelson’s appointment, Kevin St. John of Bell Giftos St. John LLC stated, “Attorney Samuelson possesses precisely the kind of temperament that is ideal for a judicial officer.” St. John also noted Samuelson “has significant experience with complex civil litigation that is superior to most other candidates for judicial office.”

Samuelson received his Juris Doctor degree from Indiana University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Valparaiso University and resides in Middleton with his wife and daughter.
