Governor Evers approves I-43 rehabilitation in the City of Milwaukee

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Governor Evers signed a $70 million contract to rehabilitate several bridges and address aging pavement along I-43, between Brown Street and Capitol Drive, in the city of Milwaukee.

Work is scheduled to begin the week of May 1, weather permitting. Zignego Company is the prime contractor for the project and will implement the following:

Project Improvements

  • Rehabilitate aging pavement
  • Rehabilitation of the following bridges:
    • Brown Street
    • Center Street
    • Wright Street
    • Locust Street
    • Burleigh Street
  • Lighting, signal, and ramp improvements
  • Adjacent intersection improvements along Locust Street and Burleigh Street
  • Construction of auxiliary lanes between interchange entrance and exit ramps for improved merging
  • All roadway improvements will stay within the existing freeway right of way.

What to Expect in 2023

  • Overnight lane and ramp closures, along with intermittent overnight full freeway closures
  • Long-term single lane closures along I-43 beginning later this summer
  • Alternating long-term ramp closures
  • Long-term local street closures are scheduled to take place for bridge work.
