Gov. Evers, WisDOT Announce Wisconsin to Receive Nearly $370 Million to Support 195 Projects in Communities Across Wisconsin
Investments to support local, rural, and urban road and bridge improvement projects statewide
MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers, together with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), today announced that the next cycle of federal funding through the Surface Transportation Program (STP) and the Local Bridge Improvement Assistance Program will provide nearly $370 million for 195 local, rural, and urban road and bridge improvement projects in counties across Wisconsin.
“From our biggest cities to our rural towns, ensuring folks, families, and communities across our state have safe roads to get to school, work, and wherever they need to go safely and reliably has been a top priority for me and my administration since Day One,” said Gov. Evers. “I’m proud to get more of these critical investments out the door so that our rural and urban communities alike can benefit from these improvements for years to come, and we can ensure that Wisconsin has the 21st-century infrastructure to meet the needs of a 21st-century economy all across the state.”
These awards build upon the work of Gov. Evers and the Evers Administration to improve safety and efficiency on Wisconsin’s roads. Under Gov. Evers’ leadership, the state has improved more than 9,600 miles of roads and 2,400 bridges statewide since 2019. Wisconsinites could drive from Wausau, Wisconsin, to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and back three times with miles to spare on the miles of roads fixed.
The governor’s announcement also comes as the Biden-era Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), which has greatly benefitted the state over the past five years, is set to expire later this year. Gov. Evers sent a letter to every member of Wisconsin’s Congressional delegation, urging them to swiftly pass a federal surface transportation reauthorization package that continues to make the important investments in Wisconsin’s roads, bridges, fueling and electric vehicle infrastructure, and broader transportation system. The BIL was championed by Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin), as well as U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan (WI-02) and Rep. Gwen Moore (WI-04). Notably, every Republican member of Wisconsin’s Congressional delegation at the time voted against the BIL.
“WisDOT’s core mission is to improve safety and efficiency for all types of transportation,” said WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman. “Eligible Wisconsin counties and their residents deserve reliable and accessible transportation to easily get around their communities, get to school, or get to work. These Surface Transportation and Local Bridge projects will help support that goal while also modernizing our transportation infrastructure.”
WisDOT’s STP allocates federal funds to complete a variety of improvements to federal-aid-eligible roadways in rural or urban areas. The Local Bridge Improvement Assistance Program distributes federal and state funds to help local governments rehabilitate and replace the most seriously deficient existing federal-aid-eligible local structures on Wisconsin’s local highway systems.
