The Lynden Sculpture Garden is located at 2145 West Brown Deer Road. Due to the pandemic, admission has been waived. All events listed below are free unless otherwise indicated. Memberships, which offer significant discounts on workshops and other events, are available.

In February, the Lynden Sculpture Garden is open daily from 10 am-5 pm (closed Thursdays). Thanks to the generosity of our donors, admission is free at this time. For the safety of all concerned, we ask you to be respectful of others by maintaining a reasonable distance and wearing a mask when necessary outdoors. Masks are required in the house. SCOTT BARTON: BURIED IN THE HEART: A REPAST FOR ANGELS AND MARTYRS

A major aspect of honoring the dead and the living is encapsulated in the foods and meals of mourning, ebó (offertory), sacraments, and gustatory rites for both entities. The repast is foundational as a site of memory to generate a protocol that fosters and enshrines collective memory. Our repast rites for the dead are concurrently touchstones for the living: providing a bridge between the realms, and an ongoing dialogue with our heritage traditions. In this exhibition of artefacts and video, food scholar and chef Scott Barton has created a literal and symbolic repast that individually and archetypically honors the deaths of Ahmaud “Maud” Arbery, Breonna Shaquelle Taylor, and George Perry Floyd Jr., and the maiming of Jacob S. Blake Jr. By creating and sharing a meal we also honor the multitude of individuals killed by state sponsored or private violence. This repast, begun during the hard lockdown, focuses on dishes that the four individuals would have enjoyed eating or cooking. The repast was shared with four of Barton’s neighbors–Charles Daniel Dawson, Marie Dutton Brown, John Pinderhughes, and John Dowell, all Harlem elders–also in the roles of individuals and archetypes. Within their lives and their works, these four individuals are dedicated to civil rights, Black culture, the politics of identity and respect for Black life, and restorative justice.
This is a Call & Response event.

Join poet and birder Chuck Stebelton the second Sunday of each month for a small-group, socially distanced bird walk on the grounds. Keeping to the perimeter of the garden, we’ll watch for seasonal migrants and resident bird species and seek out the best bird habitats to identify as many species as we can. Please dress for the weather and plan to walk in varied terrain. Bring your binoculars if you have them; no previous birding experience required.

The Lynden/HOME Refugee Steering Committee book discussion group, moderated by Lynden’s Kim Khaira, is for those interested in firsthand accounts of displacement. We consider works of non-fiction, including autobiographical and semi-autobiographical works, by writers who have faced or are facing forced displacement as refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants. Where stories of persecution, historical trauma, and loss of livelihood are effortlessly conveyed by storytellers, journalists, and humanitarians who search out or stumble upon the lives of refugees, we seek out the words of those to whom these stories belong: the narrators who are the closest to their own stories, and the stories of their people, friends, family and, of course, refugees. In February, we will be continuing with Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Admiring Silence. Newcomers welcome!

ENAMELING: A WORKSHOP WITH LESLIE PERRINO

Enameling is a timeless art form that involves sifting colored glass onto a copper base and fusing it in a kiln to create shiny, colorful works of art. In this workshop, Leslie Perrino teaches the basics of enameling, covering a variety of techniques including stencils, sgraffito, threads, silver foil, screens, and decals. She will also be covering new techniques for returning students. You will complete sample pieces for practice and can then choose from a variety of projects. No experience required, and all materials supplied.

Join art educators Claudia Orjuela and Denice Niebuhr for hands-on art making and all-senses-engaged exploration of the outdoor world at Lynden. Tuesdays in the Garden, designed for children aged 1-3, provides a nurturing environment where children’s curiosity and wonder are extended through play and exploration, and children and their caregivers learn and discover side-by-side. We’ll consider different themes, each designed to connect Lynden’s environment with children’s interests. We will encourage experimentation and the manipulation of art and natural materials to tell stories, solve problems, and develop relationships. The themes for February include Ice Sculpture, Colorful Snow, and Sweet Maple Trees. Masks required for adults and children ages 2 and up per CDC guidelines. Social distancing will be practiced at all times.
HOME: STORY TIME

Join us for a virtual, bilingual HOME Story Time from the comfort of your home. HOME Story Time features children’s books written or illustrated by authors, illustrators, and artists who have faced forced displacement as refugees, asylum seekers, or immigrants. Designed for children aged 4-8, we believe that reading picture books is a way to share and discuss big ideas with young children. We end each session with an art activity from Lynden art educator Claudia Orjuela. Follow-up activities will be available for download. The book for February is Who Are We?, written by Anneke Forzani and illustrated by Maria Russo, read in Burmese and English.
Scheduled to screen every third Wednesday of the month, HOME Story Time is a collaboration with the Milwaukee Public Library, the Islamic Resource Center, Hanan Refugee Relief Group, Alliance Française de Milwaukee, and Milwaukee African Women’s Association. Videos will remain on view once they are posted.

Lynden’s art and nature camps for children aged 4 to 15 years integrate our collection of monumental outdoor sculpture and temporary installations with the natural ecology of our hidden landscapes and unique habitats. Led by artists, naturalists, and art educators, the camps explore the intersection of art and nature through collaborative inquiry and hands-on artmaking, using all of Lynden’s 40 acres to create a joyful, all-senses-engaged outdoor experience.
COMING UP IN MARCH
March sees the return of several things: monthly cultural plant walks with artist-in-residence Angela Kingsawan; Art + Nature Lab for children aged 4-6 (and there will be a new session of Art + Nature Lab for those aged 7-11); and Lynden’s Joyce Award artist-in-residence Daniel Minter. There will be a bird walk with artist-in-residence Chuck Stebelton, a fused silver loop earrings workshop with Leslie Perrino, a moon walk with Claudia Orjuela, and a dog day. Tuesdays in the Garden will meet weekly and HOME Multilingual Story Time will be in Spanish and English. The HOME Book Discussion Group continues to read Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Admiring Silence, and there will be a new panel for the HOME: Conversations on Forced Migration series.

The Lynden operates as a laboratory at the intersection of art, nature, and culture. Since opening to the public in 2010, we have worked with artists, educators, students, and our community to create, support, and share experiences that integrate our collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures and temporary installations, Lynden’s community of artists, and the natural ecology of our 40-acre site.
