DNR Drawing Down Niebauer Springs Pond

Public Advised To Stay Off Ice

By - Dec 20th, 2021 04:31 pm

PHILLIPS, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) began drawing down the Niebauer Springs Pond on Dec. 15 to reduce the likelihood of dam failure.

The Niebauer Springs Fishery Area is located roughly seven miles northwest of Phillips and recently had a dam inspection conducted by the DNR’s Dam Safety Program. This inspection revealed significant deterioration of the outlet, which could result in dam failure.

A draw down is a process of reducing water levels on a lake or pond controlled by a dam or other structure. The pond will remain completely drawn down until the dam’s primary spillway can be repaired or replaced. A renovation timeline is not yet determined.

Ice conditions may be unstable for several weeks while the pond gradually drains. The DNR urges the public to stay off pond ice during this time and adhere to signs posted on the property.

The 13.1-acre pond is part of the Niebauer Springs Fishery Area that covers 206 acres and includes two spring feeder streams, an outlet stream, and 2,640 feet of frontage on the South Fork of the Flambeau River. The draw down will only be implemented at the pond.

Niebauer Springs Fishery Area also maintains a brook trout fishery. The annual stocking of brook trout will be suspended until further notice.

All trails and lands within Niebauer Springs Fishery Area remain open for public use.
